Mahama Summons Teacher Unions Over Strike
President John Dramani Mahama has directed government officials to meet the leadership of the teacher unions on Friday to discuss their demands and the financial implications for the national purse.
The meeting, scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Ministry of Education in Accra, comes amid an ongoing strike by three major pre-tertiary teacher unions.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) began the strike on September 25, 2026.
The unions are demanding the payment of outstanding promotion arrears, the negotiation of a new Collective Agreement and the implementation of the Deprived Area Allowance.
In an invitation signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, key government officials and heads of education agencies have been asked to attend the meeting.
They include the Ministers for Finance, Employment and Education, as well as the Chief Executive Officer of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.
Also expected are the Controller and Accountant-General, the Director-Generals of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Ghana Education Service and Ghana TVET Service, alongside the leadership of the teacher unions.
The invitation said the meeting would focus on the fiscal implications of the unions’ demands and urged participants to come prepared with relevant information to support informed deliberations.
Invitees have also been asked to treat the meeting as a priority and ensure punctual attendance.
The engagement is expected to provide an opportunity for government and the unions to review the outstanding issues and explore a resolution to the dispute that has disrupted teaching and learning in public pre-tertiary schools.
