Iñaki Williams Announces Retirement from Ghana National Team
Black Stars forward Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his journey with the Ghana national team after making 28 appearances and scoring two goals.
The Athletic Bilbao forward represented Ghana at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, after switching his international allegiance to the country of his parents.
In an emotional farewell message, Williams said the time had come to step away from the Black Stars, expressing pride in having represented Ghana and gratitude for the connection the national team gave him to his roots.
“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end.
“I leave happy, proud and with the peace of mind of knowing that I gave everything every time I wore this shirt.”
Williams said representing Ghana meant more to him than football, describing his international career as an opportunity to reconnect with his heritage.
“Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest.”
The 32-year-old thanked everyone who had been part of his journey with the Black Stars and expressed appreciation for the support and love he received from Ghanaians.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who has been part of this journey and for all the love you have always shown me.”
Although his international playing career has come to an end, Williams insisted that his bond with Ghana remains strong.
“Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am.
Williams leaves the Ghana national team having featured in 28 matches, scoring twice, with his time in the Black Stars shirt spanning major international tournaments and marking a significant chapter in his connection with his ancestral homeland.
