President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that the government has made financial provisions for the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, with $2 billion set aside to finance the project.

According to President Mahama, the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has put the amount in a special account at the Bank of Ghana to ensure that funding does not become a challenge once construction begins.

The President made the disclosure on Monday, September 14, 2026, during the handing over of the right-of-way for the project by the military.

“Let me announce that the Minister of Finance has put aside $2 billion to finance the Accra-Kumasi Expressway,” President Mahama announced.

He assured contractors working on the project that they would receive prompt payment for work completed, stressing that funding would not be a hindrance to the execution of the project.

“When the project starts, money is not going to be the problem. All certificates presented by the contractor will be paid promptly,” he assured.

President Mahama further indicated that Dr Ato Forson would ensure that the full amount required to finance the project was made available by the end of the year.

He said the financial arrangements were intended to ensure the smooth and timely execution of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway without delays arising from funding constraints.

The project is expected to improve connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, while supporting the movement of people and goods along one of Ghana’s major transport corridors.
