18 Children Among More Than 70 Killed in Zimbabwe Ferry Disaster
At least 72 people, including 18 children, have died after an overloaded ferry capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, according to police, as reported by CNN.
The ferry capsized on Tuesday after encountering strong waves while travelling on the lake. Rescue teams have since recovered additional bodies as search and recovery operations continue.
Police said the vessel was carrying more passengers than its capacity at the time of the accident, raising concerns about overloading and passenger safety.
The inclusion of 18 children among the victims has deepened the tragedy for families and communities around Lake Kariba.
Rescuers are continuing efforts to locate survivors and recover the bodies of those still missing. Authorities are also expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ferry’s overloading and the conditions under which it was operating.
The disaster has renewed concerns about safety on Zimbabwe’s inland waterways, particularly the enforcement of passenger limits and precautions during adverse weather.
Authorities have urged families with missing relatives to remain in contact with emergency response teams as the search operation continues.
