Overflowing Dammed Lake Sparks Flood Fears in Nepal and Tibet

A lake formed upstream of the Gyirong border port following a massive glacier collapse has begun overflowing, raising fears of further flooding in Nepal and China’s Tibet region.

According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, authorities have suspended rescue operations and moved personnel to safer areas amid concerns that the overflowing lake could trigger another disaster.

The lake, created after debris blocked a river during the recent Himalayan glacier collapse, continues to receive water from upstream flows and rainfall. Chinese authorities are monitoring the situation closely and working to reduce the risk of a catastrophic breach.

The development comes after devastating floods along the Nepal-Tibet border killed hundreds of people and left more than 1,500 others missing, according to recent reports.
