Prof Jonathan Annan Retained Unopposed as NDC Holds Ajumako Enyan Essiam Elections
Voting is underway in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with 1,548 delegates expected to elect executives to lead the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The election has recorded several unopposed contests, with incumbent Constituency Chairman, Prof Jonathan Annan, retaining his position unopposed for another term.
Other executives who have been declared duly elected unopposed are Vice Chairman Emmanuel Essel, Deputy Secretary Eric Takyi, Deputy Organiser Richard Donkoh, Youth Organiser Benjamin Asiedu, Deputy Treasurer Richard Essel and Zongo Caucus Coordinator Alhaji Musa Sulleyman.
Four key constituency positions are being contested, alongside eight other executive-member positions for which 12 candidates are seeking election.
The secretary position has attracted a contest between incumbent Organiser Joseph Kojo Mensah and Presiding Member Evans Mensah.
The winner will replace Andrews Kojo Duodu, who is vacating the position following his appointment as Chief Executive of the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District.
The substantive organiser position is also being contested by Lawrence Arthur, who is seeking promotion from Deputy Organiser, and Christopher Mensah.
Meanwhile, Gabriel Amoanoo and Rebecca Buckman are vying for the treasurer position.
The deputy youth organiser position has attracted three candidates: Samuel Acquah, James Otabil and Alex Appiah Quansah.
In addition to these contests, 12 candidates are competing for eight other executive-member positions, with delegates expected to elect eight of them to complete the constituency’s executive team.
Prof Annan calls for unity
In his opening address, Prof Jonathan Annan called on members of the party to unite after the elections, stressing that the NDC’s broader objective of retaining political power in the 2028 general elections should guide candidates and delegates throughout the process.
He urged all contestants to put the party’s collective interest above individual ambitions and rally behind whoever emerges victorious.
“I want to tell all of us that after today, everything will be over. We need to support whoever emerges winner so we fight together to win power,” he said.
His appeal comes as the party elects executives expected to lead its constituency-level organisation, strengthen grassroots mobilisation and communicate its policies to voters ahead of the 2028 polls.
Party declares readiness for elections
Speaking to the media, the constituency’s Director of Elections, Ama Harrison, said the party was ready for the exercise.
“Everything is set. We have elections for only five positions,” she said.
She expressed confidence that the delegates would elect executives capable of leading the party’s campaign towards the 2028 general elections and supporting the implementation of the government’s agenda.
“At the end of the day, we expect that the delegates will give us executives who will help us win the next election,” she added.
The election is expected to shape the constituency’s leadership and grassroots mobilisation as the NDC prepares for the next general elections.
