Transport Operators Announce 30% Fare Increase Despite Fuel Price Relief

Passengers across Ghana are set to pay more for public transport as the Alliance of Transport Operators has announced a 30 percent increase in transport fares, effective Thursday, August 7, 2026.

The alliance, comprising the Alliance of Drivers Ghana, PROTOA and COOPERATIVE, said the decision was reached despite the government’s recent intervention to reduce fuel prices.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, the transport operators explained that the fare adjustment was driven by rising operational costs, particularly the sharp increase in the prices of vehicle spare parts, maintenance expenses, insurance premiums and fees charged by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).

According to the operators, the cost of a Toyota Vitz engine, which they said sold for about GH¢7,000 under the previous administration, has risen to approximately GH¢20,000 within a year, placing significant financial pressure on commercial drivers.

The group maintained that although fuel prices have seen some reduction, the overall cost of operating commercial vehicles remains unsustainably high, making the fare increment unavoidable.
The alliance appealed to passengers to understand the circumstances surrounding the decision and not to perceive transport operators as insensitive.

“We urge the general public and passengers not to see us as ‘wicked’ because of this fare increase. We are also passengers and commuters when we park our vehicles,” the operators stated.

The transport operators reaffirmed their commitment to providing reliable transport services but called on the government to implement broader economic measures to address rising operational costs and help keep transportation affordable for Ghanaians.
