NPP Cancels Mfantseman Constituency Election, Orders Suspension of Central Regional Research Officer

The Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Danquah Butey Smith, has ordered the cancellation of the Mfantseman Constituency executive election held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

He has also directed the Central Regional leadership of the party to suspend the Regional Research Officer and refer him to the party’s disciplinary committee for investigations and appropriate action.

The directive is contained in a memorandum dated Thursday, August 13, 2026, and addressed to the Central Regional Chairman of the NPP, with copies to the Mfantseman Constituency Chairman and the Elections Committee.

According to the memorandum, the election was conducted without the knowledge of the NPP’s National Headquarters, the Central Regional Chairman, the Mfantseman Constituency Chairman and the Constituency Election Committee.

The Acting National Chairman described the circumstances surrounding the exercise as a “serious breach” of the party’s established procedures and directives governing the conduct of constituency elections.

Consequently, the election has been declared “null and void” and cancelled with immediate effect.The memorandum further directs all persons concerned to refrain from treating the cancelled election or its outcome as valid or binding.

The development comes barely a day after Frederick Yaw Berchie, popularly known as Wofa Yaw, emerged victorious in the Mfantseman Constituency election following a prolonged period of legal and procedural disputes over the conduct of the exercise.

The election had been seen by many party members as an attempt to bring an end to the protracted internal wrangling surrounding the constituency’s executive elections.

However, the latest directive from the national leadership has effectively reopened the matter, creating a fresh chapter in the party’s efforts to resolve the Mfantseman constituency dispute.

Mr Smith further directed that a fresh directive on the conduct of a properly authorised constituency election, including the date and other arrangements, would be communicated by the appropriate party authority.

He urged all stakeholders to remain calm and adhere strictly to official party directives to safeguard the integrity, transparency and orderly conduct of NPP elections.
