Mahama Inaugurates Five-Member Independent Fiscal Council

President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated a five-member Independent Fiscal Council with a mandate to provide credible, objective and non-partisan oversight of Ghana’s fiscal policy.

At a brief ceremony at the Presidency on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, President Mahama said the establishment of the Council was an important step towards strengthening fiscal governance and ensuring responsible management of the country’s finances.

He said effective oversight of fiscal policy would be critical to sustaining the government’s economic reforms, restoring investor confidence, promoting inclusive economic growth and improving public service delivery.

President Mahama charged the Council to scrutinise government’s fiscal decisions, assess compliance with established fiscal rules and provide sound recommendations in the national interest.

“Your responsibility is to scrutinise the Government’s fiscal decisions, assess compliance with established rules, and provide sound recommendations in the national interest,” he said.

The President stressed that public demand for transparency, accountability and prudent financial management was higher than ever, urging the Council to discharge its mandate independently and professionally.

The inauguration forms part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen fiscal discipline and institutional oversight as Ghana continues with its economic reform agenda.
